American Idol: A Lot of Waiting For The Rest of the Top 10
And then I started wondering if there's actually anything new with the rest of the Top 10 of the recent American Idol season. I mean, we've seen contestants outside the final two get record deals and have pretty successful post-Idol careers. This year is no exception: Kris Allen and Adam Lambert have snagged contracts, as well as fourth-placed Allison Iraheta. And then we wonder about the rest.E! Online caught up with them as they rehearsed for the it's-getting-seriously-close American Idol summer tour, and then I realized that they're all pretty much in a state of limbo.Read More
American Idol: Kris Allen on Michael Jackson
We've probably had some sort of Michael Jackson overflow over the past few days, but I think this is one of the more interesting angles I've seen: if not for his songs, Kris Allen wouldn't have won American Idol.Okay. Tall order, that one. Sure, Kris started his bid for votes with an MJ song, and kicked off his Top 13 campaign with a stripped down (and more comfortable, arguably) "Remember the Time", but it was in the middle of the competition when he finally established himself as one with "artistry" and eventually gave him the closely-contested win. More so, consider that Kris wasn't born when the King of Pop's biggest hits crashed the airwaves and turned him into who he is, for better or worse.

American Idol: Good Question--What Did Happen To Joanna Pacitti?
That, or the other good question--do you remember who Joanna Pacitti is?Quick history lesson then: she made some ripples on the last season of American Idol, for being an obvious favorite and a shoo-in during the auditions. She breezed towards Hollywood, and breezed towards the Top 36--that, despite Simon Cowell vowing that they will cut anyone who forgets the lyrics, which she did.Read More
American Idol: Simon Cowell Might Get $144 Million Next Season
At first glance, that is a lot of money. While we're all still wondering about whether all four American Idol judges are returning to the show next season, an interesting detail has come out as negotiations are still underway: Simon Cowell might be offered as much as $144 million just for season 9.Read More
American Idol: Ace Young Gets Engaged
An admission is in order: I don't remember Ace Young, which is pretty bad since I watched the fifth season of American Idol quite closely--in a past life, of course--and rooted for Taylor Hicks. But anyway, the detail is, he's engaged.Read More
So You Think You Can Dance: Kelly Clarkson This Week's Musical Guest

Books a Musical Guest Who Can Actually Sing," "So You Think You Can
Dance Musical Guest: With 100% Less Lip Syncing," "So You Think You
Can Dance: Keeping It In The Fox Family." Courtesy of a Fox press release we learn that this week's musical guest will be Kelly Clarkson. Or as I like to call her, someone with actual musical talent. Sure, she was discovered by FOX's other hit reality show, American Idol, which makes it seem a bit cross-promotional but there's no denying: Kelly Clarkson can sing. Kelly will perform her new hit "I Do Not Hook Up" and hopefully, unlike the other musical guests this season, she will actually sing.

'American Idol' Roundup: A Mea Culpa, 'Dreamgirls', And Still, The Tour
Whoops. I did think it was an Evanescence song they were singing on the video I uploaded on the last roundup. I only realized it wasn't when I got my copy of We Are the Fallen's first free MP3--the new name's because some band complained, whatever--and... I'm passing my quick verdict on that in today's random American Idol roundup. That, and more details from the upcoming tour, but first...Read More
'American Idol' to Re-air Michael Jackson Week in Tribute
For the first time in the network's history, Fox has announced that it will air an episode from the recently concluded season of American Idol, in tribute to Michael Jackson, who died earlier today of an alleged heart attack. The episode will air on Monday, June 29, at 8pm.Read More
Remember the Time: A Michael Jackson Retrospective
I suddenly remembered that when news of the musician's death started filtering through. The sketchy details--of him suffering a heart attack, of being found not breathing in his home, of him being brought to a Los Angeles hospital--gave way to unconfirmed detail after unconfirmed detail after confirmed detail. And then, the tributes, in 140-character bursts, from celebrities to my friends who, for the most part, were too young to have a grasp of his hits.
American Idol: Simon Cowell Jumps to Developing Content
As if American Idol judge Simon Cowell doesn't have that much on his plate, he's throwing in an extra: he is setting up a new entertainment company that will develop new shows for both his native United Kingdom, as well as the United States. While no details have yet been released, reports say he is collaborating with British billionaire Philip Green, best known as the man behind the Topshop stores. This is not the first collaboration between the two: the retail mogul has given advice to Cowell regarding his contract negotiations for Idol. (It must be a good partnership: some reports say he's been given a contract so big it'd "surpass even Oprah Winfrey's estimated earnings," according to the Financial Times.)

American Idol: Adam Lambert's Pre-Idol CD Reportedly Due This Summer
Who exactly has Adam Lambert's debut album? Sure, he did sign a deal with 19 Recordings and RCA after his run on American Idol, but his debut album might come from an independent label.Sources told Billboard.com that Hi Fi Recordings and Wilshire Records and planning to release On With The Show, an album with tracks that the singer co-wrote and recorded before Idol came along. If their plans push through, that album will hit shelves this summer, months before his first post-Idol album hits stores. The first single on that album, entitled "Want", can be heard on Hi Fi's website.

American Idol: Carly Smithson Joins Ex-Evanescence Members
In a separate life, I was watching American Idol without thinking about it too much. (Compare that with the past year, and everything I've done for this website. But I digress.) I remember being awed by some of the contestants, but I distinctly remember my mother being a fan of season 7's Carly Smithson, partly because she reminds her of Amy Lee, the vocalist of Evanescence, which happened to be one of her favorite bands. She always compared the two, and was dismayed when she was eliminated.Who would've thought that she'd be with those guys soon? In what is perhaps the most interesting thing to come out of Idol, Smithson has joined forced with former Evanescence lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody to form the band The Fallen. Also on board are two other band members, Rocky Gray and John LeCompt, as well as outsider Marty O'Brian.

Daughtry Vs. Hicks on Itunes: The winner is...
This week, American Idol winner Taylor Hicks’s self-titled album debuted at number two on the billboard charts, selling 298,000 copies. While 298,000 is certainly nothing to sneeze at, it’s quite a bit less than the Idol’s third runner-up, Chris Daughtry’s first week numbers: 304,000.
Has Hicks been “Aiken-ed?” While many still tend to believe Daughtry is the bigger star, his album was released in the midst of the frenzied, “Black Friday,” post-Thanksgiving sales week. Hicks’s debut, however, was released just last Tuesday Dec. 12th, after many had already finished Christmas shopping and sales had began to ebb. The numbers weren’t a dramatic contrast and could have easily been different had the release dates been switched. Nevertheless, it doesn’t look quite right when the third runner-up sells more than or even close to the actual winner.
Daughtry currently maintains a position at number five on the iTunes sales charts. Hicks has dropped to fifteen.
Again, although traceable to numerous factors, this evidences a potential theory. Although Hicks may do phenomenally well in first week sales, only true artists that can fit into today’s milieu, such as Daughtry, have lasting currency.
While the first week sales numbers may prove neglible when it comes to the true, long-lived power of Hicks and Daughtry, a quick glance at the iTunes music store right now might be a better indicator.

Season Five's Paris Bennet Prepares To Release CD
As "American Idol" preps its sixth season, former finalist, Paris Bennett, independently plans her own tour and the release of her debut CD, Princess P.
Bennett, niece of inspirational singer Anne Nesby originally from the Sounds of Blackness, signed with 306 Entertainment for her debut set. "Dreamin'," the autobiographical first single, is slated to impact iTunes and radio in January of 2007. Since appearing on "Idol," Bennett has toured nationally for the show, began developing her Tres P clothing line and performed recently at the annual Walt Disney Christmas Parade singing "Let It Snow" with fellow "Idol" finalists.
Princess P is scheduled to hit shelves in March of 2007, while the sixth season of "American Idol" airs January 16 on FOX.

Taylor Hicks Performs onboard USS Reagan
Hundreds of San Diego area Sailors and family members enjoyed a special holiday concert performance by 2006 "American Idol" Taylor Hicks Dec. 19 on the flight deck of USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).
The event, sponsored by the United Service Organizations (USO), also featured comedians Josh Blue and John Heffron. Both Blue and Heffron earned national attention after winning seasons of the hit NBC series “Last Comic Standing.”
Hicks said he was amazed at the size of the ship and considered it to be an honor to perform for military personnel.
"As a kid I saw the USO Bob Hope stuff and I always had the dream of being an entertainer and having my music get out to the world," said Hicks. "I think this is the beginning of a long tour for me and the USO. I look forward to going overseas and performing. I can start right here on the Ronald Reagan."

American Idol Promotors Promise Big Surprise
"American Idol" executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz promises a big event midway through the coming season of the red-hot talent show - but she won't say what it is.
"If there's one thing that makes 'American Idol' so big, it's a huge event," she told the Daily News.
"Something we're working on is a big-event show, sometime in the middle of the season, something that will blow America away," she added.
Hard to believe the folks behind "American Idol" can get the show any bigger than it already is. When it's on - and it's only around 19 weeks a year - the show is the biggest thing on the small screen, generating huge Nielsen ratings and daily water-cooler buzz.
Each season the show rolls around, there are gentle warnings that the audience level will drop. And, each year, the show does better.
Last season, the Tuesday edition of "American Idol" was watched by an average of 31.02 million people to rank No. 1 for the season. That's up 3 million from the 27.44 million the season before.
Moreover, the show has launched the careers of music superstars Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and "Dreamgirls" star Jennifer Hudson.
"American Idol" returns with two-hour editions on Jan. 16 and 17 at 8 p.m.
Few shows have had the run "American Idol" has and remained as strong. But Frot-Coutaz said a drop is not out of the realm of possibility.
"Look," she said, "it's always in the back of your mind. The only thing we can do is make the best show we can and find the best talent as possible. The rest, some of it is up to Fox and how they promoted it. The rest is the competitive landscape. If we keep giving [viewers] something entertaining, it will be fine."
Fox's competitors, however, treat the show like it's radioactive. For instance, ABC recently announced it would move "Lost" to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays to get it away from "Idol" at 9 p.m.
While most of the world goes into a slow-down mode this holiday season, the folks at 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America, which produce "Idol," are in overdrive preparing the early editions of the show.
"We're in production pretty much year-round," Frot-Coutaz said. "We start our casting in August."
This time of year, she admitted, gets a bit tense.
"It's that time when you get apprehensive about how it's going to launch," she said. "We keep our fingers crossed."
The early episodes are "great" she said, with some of the best audition shows ever. They key, she said, is mixing the good people with the truly bad ones, like, say, William Hung.
"There's some great talent out there," she said. "But there's also some people who are delusional about their talent, too. That's the beauty of an open call - everybody comes. Everybody thinks they've got a great voice."

Studdard Urges Fans to Watch Their Weight
The scales of American Idol may have tipped in Ruben Studdard's favor in 2003, but there are other scales he would like to tip a bit less.
After shedding almost 100 pounds, the Birmingham native and 2003 American Idol winner announced Monday that he wants to help other Alabamians lose weight.
Studdard has agreed to be a coach for Alabama residents who want to stick to that New Year's resolution to lose weight. He is asking the 25 percent of Alabamians who are obese to lose 10 pounds in eight weeks - a statewide total of 10 million pounds.
Since committing to a weight loss program this summer, Studdard has lost nearly 100 pounds, started eating healthier and begun exercising, according to a news release announcing the program.
"I'm not where I want to be, but I'm on the right track, and I'm excited about encouraging other Alabamians to begin their own weight loss journeys," Studdard said.
The eight-week weight loss campaign - Scale Back Alabama - will run from January through March.
The campaign, which kicks off Jan. 4 with an event featuring Studdard, is being jointly sponsored by Alabama's hospitals, the Alabama Department of Public Health and Barber Diaries.

Taylor Hicks Says He is Ready For The Big Time
Kicking back on a couch with a hot cup of tea, Taylor Hicks looks as comfortable backstage at the “Tonight Show” as he might in his own home. When Jay Leno pops into Hicks’ dressing room to say hello, the gray-haired soul singer is unfazed — a moment that reflects just how much “American Idol” has changed the 30-year-old’s life.
A year ago, Hicks was a struggling musician unknown to those outside the small Southern clubs where he performed. Today, he is a bona fide TV star and major-label recording artist whose self-titled solo debut hits stores Tuesday.
“It’s mind-blowing,” Hicks said before taking the “Tonight Show” stage recently. “This is what happens when you catch a break. I’m very thankful and very gracious for what the show has done for me.”

According to the associated press, Ruben Studdard pulled out of a charity concernt to benefit the Shriner's Children Hospital after double booking himself. Sales of the concert tickets were apparently slow to begin with, but Studdard's cancellation will wind up costing the charity money as it carried half of the expenses for booking the event.
